Jessamyn speaks

Today was a very long, very good day. This morning i spent 5 hours playing travel agent to make arrangements to attend a conference in Galway. It was especially fun as pete and i have literally been trying to go abroad since we started dating like, 6 years ago and finally it's going to happen. so i spent all that time coordinating to fly over with elijah, and fly back with pete so that elijah and i can attend the conference, and pete can come hang out. so i'll be spending 4 days in Galway, and 3 in Dublin. if any of you have been either place and have suggestions for restaurants, bars, or places to stay, that would be grand. it's a conference on the semantic web, which should be incredibly interesting and i plan to tibble a bit of the black stuff in it's native environment

Jessamyn West spoke tonight at our jointly sponsored ACM /ALA-SC event. She spoke about the choices librarians make, especially in relation to public librarians choices about technology in the library. The slides are downloadable. We had the opportunity to go out and have lunch and run around with her this afternoon and had a blast. I also got to meet Michael of tametheweb
He would make a totally great speaker for the ALA-SC for spring!

All in all a totally great thursday - now back to the grind!

BTW, I asked Jessamyn how her IU visit had gone, and she had nothing but good things to say about IU, Bloomington, and the SLIS folks that she met. She said that sometimes when she goes to talk at library schools, the students are forced to attend by their professors and are obviously disinterested; other times, the students come of their own volition, but just don't get what she's talking about. She said that the IU students that she talked to were great.

You will LOVE Galway! We went there two years ago and wished we had planned to spend more that 2 days there. Be sure to try some cheese from the Sheridans Cheese Monger shop. We bought some cheese there and a loaf of fresh bread at an open air market and feasted in the park for lunch. There's also a fish and chips place near SHeridans (begins with an M) that has the best mussels.
