double jeopardy
i've run across two really horrifying, utterly soul crushing stories this week. i honestly don't know what to say about them so i'll just point them out and let you process them yourself.Dr. Shazia Khalid
props must be given to Nicholas D. Kristof for pursuing this story and framing it in such a way that Dr. Khalid has the chance to really tell her own story. Dr. Khalid is a medical doctor from Pakistan, who after being raped in her own home, was forced out of the county, without her adopted son, to England where she has no money, no job, and no family besides her husband who went with her despite the advice of his own family who suggested that he at least divorce her due to her impurity. There's more to the story than that, but you'll have to read the articles and watch the video.

Linda Loaiza
this venezualen woman was kidnapped at the age of 18, and repeatedly tortured, raped and starved over the course of 4 months. while there is definately a suspect, Linda has had great difficulty getting the case to be adequately tried, due in part to the accusation that she was a prostitute and under venezualen penal code there are reduced penalties for crimes against sex workers.
