NT Times round-up

just a few things of note that i've run across in the NY Times today

- Sarah Vowell sits in for Maureen Dowd - rule!
A Pat on the Back

Since I have been hired, temporarily, to write about the news, here's some: seeing Pat Robertson on television cheered me up...

- I just read about plans for a massive new hotel in downtown Baltimore. that sounds exactly what downtown needs, right after all of the area near the harbor becomes so built up that you need to own a 2 million dollar condo to see it. what do you b-more folks think about this? Spike, i'm especially interested in your opinion...

That Paul Anka cover of Teen Spirit she mentions in the column is pretty cool.

I don't really care how many One commercials Pat Robertson does. I wouldn't shake his hand for all the money in the world. In fact, I'd probably spit in his eye.

my thoughts on the new hotel-- it's very hard, because on the one hand, the city doesn't need to lose $$ on the convention center (which it does) if there's a way to try and halt that and make it a profit-turning part of the Harbor area.

Also, is "redevelopment" the answer for those neighborhoods? not if that means more fancy condos and gentrification, because those people will just get pushed into other bad neighborhoods. The intractable problem in hoods like that is the drug problem in Baltimore, which we don't have a handle on, as a city, by a long shot. Addressing the drug problem would help more than fancy condos, but how to best do that, I'm not sure.

It's tough all around to answer.
